Cork is a lifeline for our planet.
As a reminder, planted for millennia in Portugal, cork oak has allowed craftsmanship to develop by creating objects such as the cork which due to its qualities (resistance, impermeability, recyclable ..) has allowed the bottling and conservation of wine.
In the south of Portugal and north of Africa, hectares of cork oak plantations are maintained to provide a raw material from the bark of this tree whose quality is second to none. Being able to make quality objects in this way, the techniques have made it possible to transform cork into fabric, thus making it possible to develop quality fashion objects in leather goods, jewellery and accessories that are too little known for my taste and which are an excellent substitute for leather bags of animal origin that require the slaughter of animals and the use of chemicals for the tanning of skins.
Today, the challenges of the environment lead us to consider, in a different and responsible way, our consumption patterns. It is urgent ... These are the small streams that make the big rivers...
Even if we do not have to feel guilty about the wrong political choices of our elected representatives, we have a moral duty to take environmental factors into account and act according to our possibilities and conscience in favour of the preservation of our planet.
Kaliona.com is part of this approach and offers you beyond acting in conscience by buying eco-responsible items that value European craftsmanship with a particular thought to landlocked territories such as islands where the fight against long-term pollution is very expensive and often ineffective.
Kat and Lak present you, in preview, the 1st collection of handbags, shoulder bags, backpacks, clutches, wallets, jewelry, watches, shoes and cork accessories made by our craftsmen.
All in oak with Kaliona.....

PHYTOTHERAPY, TODAY FOR TOMORROW
It seemed interesting to me to relay this article explaining in a clear and precise way what herbal medicine is. Treating yourself with plants is an alternative to conventional medication that is sometimes heavy and is a real complementary or alternative solution what Anton and Willem offers that develops in the existing pharmacy network to anyone who wants to hear it and on condition of being convinced
WHAT'S THAT?
Phytotherapy, from the Greek phyton, "plant" and therapeia, "to heal", corresponds to the use of plants that heal, in other words, it is a question of healing with plants qualified as medicinal.
The use of medicinal plants by man merges with the beginnings of humanity. Indeed, it is possible to consider that Man apprehended his environment by experimenting with the plants that surrounded him. This experiment allowed him to discover food plants, other medicinal plants or toxic plants. This toxicity can also manifest itself within medicinal plants, because as Paracelsus, philosopher and spagyrist doctor of the sixteenth century, pointed out, "Everything is poison, nothing is poison, it is the dose that makes the poison".
The oldest written data we have come from traditional Chinese medicine but also from the Ancient Egyptians thanks to the Ebers Papyrus dating from the sixteenth century BC. Modern archaeology has found traces of DNA from Salix alba, the white willow, in the dental tartar of a fossil carrying a dental abscess dating back about 45,000 years. This plant contains saliciline which is transformed into salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory and analgesic molecule. Salicylic acid will later give by synthesis, acetylsalicylic acid, which is none other than Aspirin!
Phytotherapy is a family that includes other disciplines:
- Aromatherapy: the use of aromatic molecules
- Gemmotherapy: the use of plant parts in the embryonic state (buds, young shoots, rootlets)
In herbal medicine it is possible to use flowers, leaves, roots, bark, sapwood, fruits, underground parts. There are different presentations for oral administration of medicinal plants:
herbal tea, plant powders in capsules, extracts: fluids or solids, mother tinctures or hydro-alcoholic extracts, EPS: Standardized Fresh Plant Extracts, SIPF: Integral Suspension of Fresh Plants...
New forms are also emerging.
To obtain some of these presentations, it is necessary to resort to extraction processes that result in these different galenics. These extractions require different solvents such as water, alcohol, glycerin, vegetable oils and now CO2 in a supercritical state.
As the data evolves every year, we have more and more evidence of the effectiveness of medicinal plants through research and pharmacognosy (from the Greek pharmakon which means drug, venom, poison and gnosis, knowledge). According to the Doctor of Pharmacy and specialist in ethnopharmacology, Jacques Fleurentin, 70% of the traditional properties of medicinal plants are scientifically validated.
Every year we discover new medicinal plants, they sometimes have new properties that we did not know until now. Phytotherapy is therefore a science that evolves with the most recent data, so it opens up an almost infinite field of possibilities. Medicinal plants have not revealed all their secrets, in this sense, they have not finished surprising us!
Sharing at the service of eco-responsibility
This example comes from the sister island, Martinique, at the initiative of citizens.
Since 2019, a Facebook page "PA JETEY" which means "do not throw away" has been created to encourage donations of various goods that we have acquired in good condition and that could be used by other citizens. The products are not for sale or barter. The pleasure is shared by the one who gives and the one who receives and is part of an environmental and eco-citizen approach.
An eco-citizen objective
"We are here to reduce the environmental impact" also specifies the page "Pa Jétey Martinique", to "avoid overconsumption and promote recycling". In return, some members express their satisfaction after giving or receiving.

Hello, I wanted to say a big thank you to the lady (who will recognize herself), who gave me the baby swing. That's it, with a few scraps of fabric, she found a new youth... Thank you again.
